Root Canal Treatment

Save your natural tooth, relieve severe pain, and eliminate infection with root canal treatment.

Root canal treatment (also called endodontic treatment) is a procedure to save a tooth that is infected or severely damaged at its inner core — the pulp. The infected pulp is carefully removed, the canals inside the tooth are cleaned and shaped, and then sealed to prevent re-infection. This allows you to keep your natural tooth rather than having it extracted. A crown is often placed over the tooth after root canal treatment to protect it.

Signs You May Need This Treatment

  • 1Severe, throbbing toothache that does not go away
  • 2Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers after the source is removed
  • 3Swelling of the gum near the affected tooth
  • 4A pimple or abscess on the gum (a small bump indicating infection)
  • 5Tooth has turned dark or changed colour
  • 6Deep crack or fracture in a tooth
  • 7Pain that worsens when lying down or at night

What Happens During Your Visit

1

Examination & X-Ray

The dentist will examine the affected tooth and take X-rays to assess the extent of infection and the shape of the canals.

2

Local Anaesthesia

The area is numbed with local anaesthetic. Most patients find the procedure to be no more uncomfortable than a normal filling.

3

Removing the Infected Pulp

A small opening is made in the top of the tooth. Tiny instruments are used to carefully remove the infected pulp tissue from inside the tooth and canals.

4

Cleaning & Shaping the Canals

The inside of the canals is cleaned, shaped, and disinfected to eliminate bacteria and infected tissue.

5

Sealing the Tooth

The canals are filled with a biocompatible material and sealed. A temporary or permanent filling is placed on top.

6

Crown Placement (if needed)

After root canal treatment, the tooth is often more fragile. A dental crown is usually recommended to protect the tooth and restore full function.
